Day One. Travel to Rome

















APRIL1 travel day. We flew to Charlotte and got right in line to our Rome plane at the end of boarding. Just in time! Choice movies again on the screen in the seat in front of us..We watched Arrival and i tried to get some sleep. Bruce stayed up and watched Fury.  This morning we watched Sing. It is raining in Rome with cool air. There were crowds in all the roman ruins we saw as we drove by in the hotel van.  Hotel Camilia is very nice and we have the quiet top floor. Our room is 416, and Dad and Alan are in 408.

We went to a late lunch/early dinner at La Famiglia Restorante Pizzeria, which is right around the corner from our hotel. Bruce, Alan an I ate pizza with prosciutto on it -very good! Dad ordered gnocci bolognese, which was also really tasty. The restaurant was busy, but our waiter did a great job. We may end up there again.
We are exhausted from so  little sleep so we took showers and a quick nap.  Then we went on an early evening stroll to a church and saw the British Embassy.  Naturally we found a mini mart for drinks (in my case, coca cola) for today and  tomorrow. Everyone is still really tired and trying to adjust to Italy time, so tonight its an early night and off to bed.

Full day in Rome April 3,2017

St Peter's Square     We all woke up early and headed to breakfast downstairs.  Coffee is espresso with warm milk according to our waiter's Español. Continental breakfast with bread, meat, cheese, hard boiled eggs, yogurt, pastries and fruit.     We got ready for our 10am Vatican tour by heading out at 9am for the Metro at Repubblica Station. Wow, it was a squeeze to get in, but luckily a lot of passengers got off at the next two stations. So glad to have paid for a tour because of huge crowds.   We enjoyed a full three hour tour of the Vatican museum, Rafael rooms, and the Sistine Chapel.  A marvelous sight to see in a room full of people.     Next stop was Saint Peters Basilica and the priceless sight of the Pietà. Travel to Lucca, Italy

    Today is the day we travel to Lucca. After breakfast, we packed up and walked to the main train station in Rome. A short 10 minute walk with luggage was easy. We walked past people heading to work, sleeping bags with the homeless and many heading for the station like us.        For 40 minutes we waited and watched  the departure board, waiting for our terminal number.  Dad  had to use the restroom and asked a police officer ( in very broken Italian) where one was. Bruce headed with him for a wild goose chase, and never were able to find the bathroom. Our train came in with only a 10 minute window to board. Luckily it was the track right in front of the gate we had been waiting at.   The high speed train to Florence         We really enjoyed the high speed train. Saturday - Cruise day

We got up at our normal 6 am and headed to breakfast, then did some last minute souvenir hunting along the canal. Alan met someone we were almost sure didn't exist in Italy - a rude store clerk. That was easily solved by leaving the store and making his purchase at another store. There certainly isn't a lack of shops and kiosks in Venice!     The rest of the morning was spent packing and relaxing at the hotel. On TV, it was funny watching Property Brothers dubbed in Italian. Check out was 11 am, and we spent a few extra minutes talking with Gionni, thanking him for all he did for us. Suitcases in hand, we headed down the canal towards Roma Square. It was about an easy 10 minute walk to the People Mover, a short monorail that costs 1.50 Euro per person.
